Rachel Jessop and her boss, Nate Ferrentino, are operatives for Department 6, a private security firm that handles jobs in the states that the government cannot. Rachel and Nate are also ex-lovers, something Rachel is reminded about daily while working with Nate. She put herself in a bad position with him and now regrets the spontaneous night she showed up in his bed, assuming he was feeling the same emotions. Turns out, she was wrong and now, everything is awkward between them. But they have a new assignment which will force them to put feelings aside because in Paradise, Arizona, things are far from happy.

Rachel and Nate need to infiltrate the Church of the Covenant because there are accusations of women being stoned, of women going missing, and more under the surface. Nate and Rachel have to pretend to be married which is not easy for either of them since they are both facing unresolved issues. However, it is the only way to discover the truth about Ethan Wycliff, leader of the church. A bad situation is about to get worse and Rachel and Nate are caught in the middle. Will they uncover the truth in time, before Rachel is used as a sacrifice for the cult?
WHITE HEAT definitely lives up to the heat in the title. This book is not only filled with unresolved chemistry but it has some very intense and scary situations at its core. This cult is definitely far from perfect and it was downright scary reading about the practices they used to become closer to God. The story's strength remains with Nate and Rachel as they work together to uncover the truth. Working together truly means having to let go of the past between them and start to forge something better. I loved the emotional heat built between these characters. Rachel has seen the bad side of cults and has therefore embraced a life free of them, which means sometimes, leaving her heart bare. Nate has always guarded his emotions and is afraid to let Rachel in. But something has to give before it is too late for their chance to blossom.
Brenda Novak completely satisfies once again in WHITE HEAT. There are few romantic suspense writers who do such a fine job of meshing suspense and romance. Novak is at the forefront of her genre and it shows on every page.
