What The Dead Know

When the Bethany sisters were abducted thirty years ago from a local mall, their parents and the community as a whole were first dumbfounded, then horrified.  Hope that they would be returned safe and sound soon gave way to despair and caused a family to never be the same again.

The question that eluded police for years was how it was possible to kidnap two girls in a busy mall and nobody see a thing?  This cold case is brought to light once again thirty years later, when a woman involved in a hit-and-run claims to be Heather, the younger one, of the Bethany sisters.  Can she be telling the truth, or is she just a very clever woman wanting to avoid being charged in the accident?

As the police check out every lead Heather grudgingly gives out, the more complex and twisted the story becomes.  Where does the truth start and the lies end?   Does this woman claiming to be Heather really know what happened so long ago, or are they all on a wild goose chase chasing after ghosts.

Laura Lippman has created a cunning, fast-pasted suspense with WHAT THE DEAD KNOW.  The reader is taken on a journey that covers all emotions from elation to despair.  If you like to be kept guessing until the last page than I highly recommend this novel for you!
