At the age of approximately five, Gemma La Porte was abandoned on a ferry by her old Indian grandmother Totu.  Though she has no Indian features, she has no idea why she was rejected.  Pete and Jean LaPorte adopted her and she was raised on a farm.  Her adopted mother opened shop, claiming to be a psychic, though she was a fraud.  The psychic in the family was Gemma and she did not like how her mother was defrauding the townspeople.  Gemma has always suffered from headaches so her mother took her to a doctor, who prescribed medicine for her.  The medicine helped the pain, but dimmed her abilities.  At eighteen, she ran away with an army man and followed him as he moved around.  However, their relationship deteriorated as her headaches and memory loss increased after she refused to take the medicine, believing it was bad for her health.  Her boyfriend destroyed her self-esteem, enjoying a sadistic streak that showed up in different ways.  She could not remember how her boyfriend died, but after his death, she returned home and joined her stepmother in her psychic readings.  Now both her parents are dead and she lives on the farm alone.

When Will Tanninger was in his freshman year, his brother Dylan got drunk and tried to jump off the roof into the pool, but he missed the pool and hit the concrete, killing himself.  A year younger then Dylan, Will was struck hard by his brother’s death and it eventually helped turn his interest first to law then to criminology.  Will was barely out of school when he took a position with the Winslow County Sheriff’s Department.  Though it was supposed to be for only a short period since he had plans to go to law school, away from his widowed mother who had lost her grip on reality after her oldest son’s death, he hadn’t been able to leave her.  He also ended up in a relationship with Dylan’s girlfriend, which only took him six months to see that it was a disaster.  It took her eight years to come to that realization.  She still shows up unexpectedly at times.  His partner Barb Gillette also wants a relationship with him.  He made the mistake of taking her out a few times.  Although he wants to keep it to a working relationship, she wants to take it to the next level.

Gemma woke up in the hospital, bruised and bloody, with no idea how she got there.  When Detective Will Tanninger questions her, she can’t remember anything that happened in the past three days, not even the fact that she smashed her car.  She has to dig deep to remember her name and where she lives.  Not in possession of her purse, she was admitted as Jane Doe.  Her on again/off again memory has only grown worse since the accident.  According to the detective, a woman meeting her description and driving a silver vehicle like hers drove off after hitting a man who is now in the hospital fighting for his life.  The man had been about to grab a young soccer girl when he was struck by a vehicle and the man’s van was equipped with chains, ropes, handcuffs and items of torture.  There were also dog-eared pages of crude child pornography inside the pockets of the vehicle.  Not knowing if she did it and not even sure of the location of her vehicle, she has the feeling that she needs to get away.  Though she can barely stand on her feet, she dresses in her bloodied clothes and makes her way downstairs at the hospital.  However, the sexy detective finds her and helps her back to her room.  With hopes of reviving her traumatized memory and remembering her obscure past, she has no choice but to trust the detective.  However, that is not her only problem.  There is someone else out there looking for her.  As Will’s feelings for her deepen, he tries to prove her innocence, but everyone else believes she is guilty.  Is she the killer?  Can he prove her innocence before it is too late for both of them?

Though author Nancy Bush is usually known for her acclaimed Jane Kelly mysteries, which I enjoy, she has surpassed herself with UNSEEN, an edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting romantic mystery.  This adventurous thriller will grab you from the first page and keep you on edge until the satisfying conclusion.  This story kept me guessing right up to the end.  Brimming with adventure, an intriguing plot, mystery, surprises and interesting characters, this book is a winner.  It kept me up all night, as I could not put the book down until the mystery was solved and I knew the outcome.  I highly recommend UNSEEN to anyone looking for a wonderful read.
