Lia has been called back to her hometown
of Camel Cove, California because of the disappearance of her sister, Sylvie, and Sylvie's son, Deion.  Lia has been estranged from her sister for seven years and did not even know that Sylvie had a son, as Sylvie has always been attracted to women.  Lia and her sister parted ways when their parents died and Lia was trying to make Sylvie understand that she had some psychic abilities that Sylvie found outrageous.

Lia had portents before their parents passed away and feels that she may have been able to stop their deaths from occurring if she had just paid attention to the signs that were being given to her. It is the same right now with her sister's disappearance. She is consistently seeing the number eight and knows that this is somehow prevalent to finding out what has happened to her sister and her nephew.

After arriving back in her hometown, Lia becomes reacquainted with her professor in college, Jared Trimble. They had a very steamy affair when she was his student and he still attracts those feelings for her, as she does for him. She also meets Sylvie's superior in a government agency that was working on ensuring the safety of the President in the past.

Both Jared and Mark are crossword puzzle enthusiasts and are involved in competition in solving and creating them. Crossword puzzles have been in the local newspaper leading to clues of the disappearance of seven women and their children and the latest puzzle includes Sylvie and Deion in the answers.

There is also the possibility that Sylvie disappeared intentionally to avert a custody battle with her invitro donor for her son. It is hard for people to understand that an author of a safety book for women would be so lax as to be murdered or taken without something being obvious.

The author takes the reader through many scenarios about who is guilty for Sylvie's disappearance. I found the book a little confusing, with many scenarios playing out at the same time.  But, that is what made the book worth finishing. There were a lot of ways for the story to go and the end was worth the  perseverance. TIDINGS OF FEAR is very quick-paced. The characters were a little confusing, but it was a good story and well worth the read!
