Stakel has led a very difficult life. He was taken from his family at a very young age and forced to become a solider in the Villous Queen’s personal army. He endured years of torture and rape at the hands of the priests, treated little better than an animal he was happy to escape. However, he does not know what to make of his enemy, especially the leader of the Vanguard.

 

When his second in command General Excelsie arrives unexpectedly despite his orders to stay at the front Rathian is angry until he sees the Villious prisoner he has captured. He was abandoned by the rest of his men and he has the ability to heal himself. He is unlike anyone the Imperator has ever met. The prisoner intrigues Rathian and is constantly on his mind.

 

The world building in this novel is incredible. The setting and customs are described in rich detail. The reader is immersed in the mythology and politics of Launioc and of the Vanguard. Stakel is a complex and intriguing character and Rathian is a good match for him. The plot flows well and held my interest. I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. THE VANGUARD by T.A. Chase is a fascinating story and I highly recommend it.
