Jasmine Stratford of The Last Stand has made it her life’s work to help victims return home to their loved ones. Unfortunately, the case that has eluded her for sixteen years is that of her missing sister, Kimberly, who was taken from their home while Jasmine was babysitting. When Jasmine receives a mysterious package that contains her sister’s bracelet her world turns upside down yet again and it leads her to Louisiana and into the arms of Romain Fornier.

Romain’s daughter Adele was kidnapped and murdered. When the not guilty verdict was announced, Romain took justice into his own hands and shot his daughter’s murderer. After some time spent in prison, Romain just wants to focus on the present, on surviving day to day while forgetting the past. When Jasmine comes striding into his world, with theories about the identity of the true killer, Romain just wants to shut her out. While Jasmine is immersed in the past, Romain needs to exist in the present. He needs to shut out his feelings or else his world may come crashing down around him. But Jasmine has a new lead and she is not letting her sister’s kidnapper escape once again. As their lives entwine, Jasmine and Romain are about to uncover some startling truths, some scary lies, and a growing desire and trust in each other.

STOP ME is the second book in Brenda Novak’s The Last Stand series. It is the kind of atmospheric bayou story that will have tingles racing up and down your spine while you look over your shoulder for the bad guy. Jasmine is a tenacious, determined woman. She has lived with the devastation of her sister’s disappearance for too long and now she finally has the chance for answers, even if those answers lead to Kimberly’s death. Here is a woman who presses on, no matter the obstacles, no matter the danger she is facing. It takes a hard edged man, a man of integrity, and a man facing an equal loss to work with Jasmine. Romain is definitely that man. There is a bitter anger inside him, anger at the system that deprived him of justice, and anger that his daughter is gone. This is a fast-paced story, with the action taking place in a short time frame. However, it is more than long enough for deep emotions to swell to the surface between Jasmine and Romain.

One thing I always enjoy about Brenda Novak stories is that the bad guys and the good guys have shades of gray. STOP ME is no different. There are no easy answers for Romain and Jasmine, no matter how much they want easy answers. The difficulties draw them together, but it is in the face of hope that they learn to work together as a team. STOP ME is an arresting presence in the romantic suspense genre!
