Dare Callahan has had a thing for Angie since he moved to town but she will not give him the time of day. When Dare is asked to keep an eye on Angie on her guiding trip, he balks, but reluctantly agrees. If Harlan, a man who was friends with Angie’s dad, does not feel right about the trip, then he believes the man. Dare will get some fishing in and stay hidden. He is sure nothing will go wrong.
But something does go wrong and it puts Angie and Dare on the run, not only from a human hunter but from a deadly bear. Nature is not always kind and in PREY, it is deadly.
PREY is the newest book from Linda Howard. Some of her trademark sarcastic wit is evident throughout the story. More than anything, this story stood out for me because of the grizzly descriptions of death. The bear in this story is like something out of a nightmare and Howard oh so accurately captures the deadly destruction bears bring to humans. The romance in this book is mild and does not stand out as much as I would like. However, there are a few moments where Dare and Angie light up the pages. PREY is mostly memorable for its gory nature descriptions. This may not be a story for the weak-stomached, but if you can get past the gore, there is a light romance that helps to calm the waters.
