Allison Donovan, a sixteen-year-old student, lived with her parents, her ten-year-old brother Johnny and her seven-year-old sister Jenny in Crows Creek, Kansas.  As she arrived home one fateful day in the midst of a windstorm, she walked in to discover her mother dead, sitting on the sofa with her decapitated head in her lap.  That is all Allison knew as someone struck her over the head from behind causing her to black out.  Later, as the only survivor of the massacre, besides her father, who was imprisoned for the murders, she spent a year in a mental hospital and then went to live with her Uncle David and Aunt Maureen.  Not returning to school at the time, she became pregnant and married her high school sweetheart Bobby Clemmins, only to lose her husband to a high-speed race one year later, leaving her a single mother.  Allison, who once adored her father, now hates him for what he has done.

Seth Walker’s father was imprisoned when Seth was younger.  A teenage girl accused him of rape. Four years later, she recanted her accusation.  However, the day before his father was to be released, a fellow inmate stabbed him to death.  The initial accusation made his mother turn to booze and drugs.  His father’s death led her to take an overdose of pills, which killed her.  Now Seth is a lawyer and a licensed private investigator.  Upon receiving an inheritance, he had free time to devote to Freedom, Inc. to help dig up information and investigate cases for those supposedly wrongly incarcerated.

Fifteen years after the murders, Allison Donovan Clemmins is now a teacher, having returned to school to get her degree in education, which is the ideal occupation to allow her to spend time with her son Sam.  Seth arrives in town and though Allison is initially against it, she finally agrees to help him with her father’s case, making many of the townspeople uneasy to have the case reopened.  As Seth and Allison start asking questions around town, Allison learns some things about her family of which she was previously unaware.  Then she starts receiving threats and animals in the area, including pets, are beheaded.  When Sam’s pet rabbit is killed, things are getting too close to home.  However, even worse things will happen before the killer is unmasked.  All of the townspeople worry about who will be next.  Nevertheless, the killer is determined to get the one who got away fifteen years ago…Allison.  As they investigate together, Seth and Allison are strongly attracted to each other and they start to build on their feelings for each other.  Allison is finally learning to trust a man again.  Will she be let down once more?

THE LAST GASP is a gripping, fast-paced romantic suspense, which draws the reader into the storyline and takes them on a tension-filled, suspenseful ride right up until the completely satisfying conclusion at the end of the book.  Readers will be riveted to the book from the very first page and be unable to put it down until they finish reading the very last page.  I found myself sitting up until the middle of the night reading, unable to go to sleep until I finished reading the book.  There are moments of tears and moments of joy in this emotionally gripping tale, which you will remember long after the book is closed.  Carla Cassidy is a highly talented author and she gives you a glimpse into the mind of the killer as well as the victim.  Run out and get yourself a copy of THE LAST GASP for your bookshelf.  It is a ‘keeper.’  Do not miss it!
