For ten years, Ellie was more like a robotic wife, doing whatever her husband asked, saying what he wanted to hear, wearing what he chose for her and starving herself to keep her figure the way he liked it.  She has not had a pet since she got married.  Her new husband complained he was allergic.  Giving her pet dog Rudy to her mom, Ellie went on her honeymoon only to return home to the news that Rudy had been run over by a speeding taxi and been killed. Those days are over. She has spent the last year becoming her own woman.  Going back to her maiden name and with a loan from her mother Georgette, she is starting over.  After signing her divorce papers, Ellie is celebrating her freedom.  Going to the ASPCA to celebrate she not only hears a voice, but it knows things about her; Rudy has come back as a Yorkshire terrier/poodle mix and they can communicate with each other.  She soon finds that she can hear the thoughts of all dogs and they can understand what she says.  This leads to her dream job as a professional dog walker in her new enterprise known as Paws in Motion.  She works on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and she only walks small breeds of fifteen pounds or less.  She figures small dogs mean small messes to get up.  Rudy also has to approve of them.  Ellie is in competition with two extremely aggressive dog walkers so she has to watch her back.

Detective Sam Ryder is a detective on the NYPD working in homicide.  His partner Fugazzo is off on leave since he and his wife just had a baby.  So Sam has been working alone.  He is just not into dogs and pets.  His captain had a small dog that had to be put down and the captain takes pets seriously so Sam watches his attitude about pets around his boss.  Sam’s mother has family dinners each week and keeps trying to get him to be there, but he has been so busy that he rarely makes it to the dinners.

After several weeks on the job, Ellie stumbles on a dead client Professor Albright, and the very sexy, but arrogant Detective Sam Ryder is only too eager to point the finger at her as the number one suspect.  When it is discovered that the professor’s prized possession; his champion Bichon Buddy is missing, Ellie is worried and determined to find him.  Her theory is that if she finds Buddy, she will be able to find the killer.  Either the killer will be with Buddy or Buddy will be able to tell her who the killer is, but who will believe her?  Sam has no problem with her looking for the dog, but he does not want her interfering with the investigation.  However, their paths continue to cross.  Sam and Ellie are already attracted to each other, and they are drawn closer together as they spend so much time with each other.  Will Ellie find Buddy before it is too late?

HOUNDING THE PAVEMENT, the first book in her DOG WALKER MYSTERY series, is an amusing cozy mystery.  The dogs are charming with individual personalities.  For instance, Twink, whose favorite program is the A-Team, wants everyone to call him Mr. T since he seems to believe he is the canine version of Mr. T from the program.  Full of humor, mystery, charismatic characters, a madcap plot and many bizarre dogs, this book is unforgettable. The author Judi McCoy created quite an imaginative story with this mystery.  She is even donating all the royalties from the sales of these books to Best Friends Animal Society.  I believe after reading this one, like me, you will be looking forward to the next book in this series.  I recommend HOUNDING THE PAVEMENT for those looking for a charmingly unique mystery.  Do not miss it!
