I’ve been a huge fan of Ms. Dohner’s writing since she bowled me, and quite a few others over with her first book, RAL'S WOMAN. TOUCHING ICE is the latest in her cyborg series.

Megan is a programmer on board a ship which is basically a flying brothel.  Her job is to maintain the main computers and sometimes to repair the sex bots on board the ship.  It’s a lonely life with only the smart arse main computer to talk to and no other company.  When she sees cyborg Ice for the first time, it’s lust at first sight, and she has to pretend that he’s a possible security risk in order to get the computer to allow her to monitor and watch Ice interact with the sex bots.

When the ship is damaged, Megan has to get off the ship before it explodes.  Ms. Dohner allows you to feel Megan’s nervousness in taking a calculated risk and posing as a sex bot.  At last she’ll get to touch the object of her obsession, but how convincing can she be as a robot and not give away the fact that she’s human?

The way that Ice is described makes you understand why Megan is driven to such extremes to meet him--tall, gray and sexy--but it is clear that loneliness is also a factor in Megan’s actions.  Megan has been abandoned by everyone she’s ever cared about, yet is brave enough to not run away from her feelings for Ice and to trust him.  Cyborgs have good reason to hate humans, and there are obstacles to their being together permanently.

Ice tries to take after his name, but I couldn’t help but be touched by the obvious way that he tried to distance himself from Megan and yet was protective enough of her to risk his career and life.  Ms. Dohner really knows how to create hot alpha males who have definite soft spots for the loves of their lives, and Ice is no exception.  Ice is less stereotypically cyborg and more ‘human’ than the previous heroes in this series.  One of the many things I enjoy about Ms. Dohner’s writing is that she’s also very prolific.  Though I am not the most patient person, let’s just say that I await her next book with baited breath.
