Nina Bradley isn’t looking for love; after all it’s obvious all the good men are either related, involved with someone else or gay.  Her last relationship ended disastrously and she sees no need or reason to jump into another one.  Her friend Daphne’s dreams foretelling of a vampire attack on Nina have her a bit discomfited but she’s not at all convinced that Daphne’s psychic either – Daphne tends to be rather emotional and dramatic.  So it shouldn’t surprise her that Daphne’s asked a dhampir bodyguard to keep an eye on her and ensure her safety.  Nina isn’t at all pleased by this turn of events – especially since she’s incredibly attracted to him.  He’s half vampire and a relationship between them is completely out of the question, isn’t it?

Born of a human mother and vampire father Jovan Makovic is considered a dhampir.  He is extremely proud of the changes the dhampirs have made in the vampire culture.  No longer are they a bunch of blood thirsty killers because the dhampirs have been hunting them and injecting them with a genetic altering substance.  There are still a few rogues out and that’s the reason he’s agreed to guard Daphne’s friend Nina.  What he doesn’t expect is for her to be such a challenge to him or so irresistible.   Keeping things strictly professional between them could prove to be the most difficult part of this assignment.

If Jovan had any preconceived notions that guarding Nina would be an easy endeavor he’s in for quite a surprise.  Nina tries his patience on every level.  She’s outspoken, stubborn and seems to have utter disregard for his instructions.  If he wasn’t so frustrated by her lack of concern for her own safety he’d be completely enchanted by her.    When one of her ventures leads her directly to the location of active vampire activity it becomes impossible to deny the attraction between them, but Jovan fears that Nina won’t be able to handle his dark side.  After all, nothing about his life or job is ‘normal.’

THE UNNECESSARY BODYGUARD is the first title in what looks to be a promising series.  This story is fast paced, humorous and at times even suspenseful.  I adored the interplay between Jovan and Nina – especially in the beginning when it seemed that Nina was purposely antagonizing him.  There’s an emotional connection which draws the reader into the storyline and holds you captive until the very last page and even then you’re left wanting to know more.  THE UNNECESSARY BODYGUARD is Evie Balos’s first published story and I must say I’m very impressed.  I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more books by this talented author in the very near future and can’t wait for the next release in the DHAMPIR DESIRE series.  There’s just something undeniably sexy about these men that makes me a bit envious of Nina.
