Rafe Hunter is a vampire slayer. He comes in, and thanks to his augmented slayer capacities which have been cultivated since birth, spots the vampire and kills it pronto. Until the day he meets Selena. She strikes him as a woman who could do him in, and worse, who could do his heart and his soul in too. His fascination with her is also costing him in his line of work, because thanks to her, he has lost his ‘prey’ not once, but twice in a row.
But is it mere coincidence that his quarry escapes every time Selena is around? What is it about her that throws his slayer abilities off kilter? And what if Selena herself were at the heart of the problem?
Too many questions arise, and the more Rafe seeks the answers, the more he gets mired into a world of dangerous and unimaginable possibilities.
Love is also peeking its nose in, but can either of them allow it to happen?
There are many ‘lovable’ vampires out there in the world of fiction, but rarely will you find one as likable and wholesome as Selena. Despite being a creature reputed to bear evil and death, she shines out of the dreary lot of her kind by remaining true to her human heart and soul. The fact that she can’t stand the mere spectre of blood also weighs into the balance. Selena is a tremendously human character in the sense that the beauty of the human heart and the purity of the human soul remain unstained despite the blood-lust that afflicts her. You wish for her to find love, and this happens through the very yummy hero Rafe.
Rafe is a man who is very sure of himself, yet he comes across as someone you’d immediately forgive if you knew him in real life. Thrown into turmoil from birth through the part of the slayer, a role he never chose for himself, you are bound to feel compassion for him. A part of your heart goes out to him, and the utter frustration of his existence is bound to touch anyone.
So, when these two meet, you cannot help but root for their couple. The attraction is definitely there, sizzling off the pages and burning its way through the story. Ms. Bella writes with a sure pen, and her mastery over her characters is a joy to follow. The world that Ms. Bella paints is dark yet bright at the same time, heavy yet weightless and buoyant with humour at times.
The story of Selena and Rafe is sure to please any lover of vampires, sexy slayers, and plain romance lovers alike. A single question remains – is there more to come? The ending definitely could suggest as much, and I’m sure anyone who will read THE TROUBLE WITH CURSES and fall in love with it will yearn for more.
