Twenty-seven-year-old Josey Cirrini receives quite the shock one morning when she opens up her closet to find Della Lee Baker hiding inside. Della Lee is one of the more notorious citizens of Bald Slope, North Carolina, and Josey just cannot fathom why Della Lee has decided to hide out in her closet. Della Lee’s appearance is about to change Josey’s world in ways she cannot even begin to imagine.

Josey still lives at home and takes care of her rather formidable and cruel mother. She has always been the obedient and good-natured daughter, even as she pines for her longtime crush, Adam, and longs for friends and a chance to be part of the community. Della Lee is prodding Josey to put herself out there, and though she is hesitant, she is slowly taking chances, including meeting a new friend, the lovelorn and recently broken up, Chloe. They come from different worlds but their friendship is quick to blossom.

Enter a world of magic, books, yummy food, and the warmth of a small community as you watch Josey change and appreciate the woman that is emerging.

Sarah Addison Allen enchants and captivates in THE SUGAR QUEEN. Magic abounds on these pages and affects the characters in deeply personal ways. Josey starts off as a rather hen-pecked daughter. She is not sure who she wants to be, but instead spends her time dreaming. Della Lee makes her see that there is a whole wonderful world out there for her to discover. There is love, joy, pain, and hope. Watching their friendship develop is humorous and touching. Then there is Chloe who is facing some hard decisions about her own life. She has books following her, an ex-love determined to win her back, and her own pressing need to stand as an individual. Both of these women are quirky, interesting, and very real characters. The love stories add enough drama and romance to bring another element of charm to the story. Josey, Chloe, and Della Lee are going to leave indelible impressions, even as the story ends. THE SUGAR QUEEN is a work of fantastic imagination and strong women.
