Helen Day is always helping others, whether it’s bringing meals to those who are homebound to going out for dinner with a lonely friend. That is how she finds herself eating at Gertie’s Diner with Miss Mabel and chatting with Lexie, the diner’s waitress.  Only today it is different.  Today she sees the man from her dreams.  The man who watches her go up in flames.  But she’s not ready to have him wreck her life.  However, before she can escape a creature attacks the diner causing the patrons to flee and setting off a series of events that will change Helen forever. 

BURNING ALIVE is the start of a new paranormal series from Ms. Butcher.  Helen has a recurring dream of her death but never expected to meet the man in it.  Drake is a Theronai warrior whose people have protected humans at great cost to their own survival.  When they touch, something magical happens which is explored throughout the book.  They have a connection that seems to grow even when they are trying to stay alive.  Helen had to learn a whole new way of life if she wanted to survive while Drake has to have faith that she will make the right choices.  BURNING ALIVE is very fast paced but at the same time must lay a lot of groundwork for future books.  It seems like every character has secrets which will ultimately affect the future.  There are a lot of forces at work and right now no one looks to have a clear advantage in the war.  I look forward to reading more about these complex characters and peel back the intricate layers that are being introduced in BURNING ALIVE.
