Joel Hatcher is desperate. Three weeks ago his life became a living nightmare. A box arrived at his home filled with notebooks and a letter claiming that there is a curse on his family and that he is next in line. Sure that he is the victim of some kind of sick prank he throws the box in the trash without a second thought. The very next day and completely out of the blue, Joel lost his job.
Unfortunately for Joel, the loss of his livelihood was only the beginning. A week after he lost his job his house was destroyed in a fire and he was forced to begin living in his car. Three days ago he awoke with his body covered in painful sores. Joel can no longer deny the evidence he is cursed and in dire need of help. With nowhere else to turn, Joel looks finds a spiritualist in the phonebook. Madame Eugenie’s ad claims she can break curses. He is determined to get her help.
When a stranger shows up at Gen’s door in the middle of the night claiming to be cursed she thinks he is crazy. However, when she sees how much he is suffering she knows she cannot turn him away. If only she had any idea how to help him.
I find this story absorbing for several reasons. This story is very creepy and the plot is very well thought out. The mystery and suspense builds with each discovery that Joel and Gen make. As Joel begins to feel the effects of each curse the reader can feel his increasing pain and desperation. Gen is intriguing because she genuinely cares yet she is so torn between Joel and her past that at times I wasn’t sure if I liked her or not. In the end her difficult position made me identify with her more. THE NINTH CURSE by K.J. Gillenwater is a gripping and spine-tingling paranormal romance.
