Alania was taken from her home as a young girl and separated from her twin. She barely remembers Riki, her mother or her other sister Lora. Her life has been reduced to slavery and caring for an unhatched dragon egg. She knows her life is coming to an end. When the dragonet emerges, Salomar fully expects the dragon to eat her.
Tor is an ice dragon; he’s rare and beautiful. As he struggles to break free from his shell he begins to bond with Lana. Salomar’s plans for him and Lana go awry, and soon he will not longer be able to control Tor or Lana.
After making their escape, the unlikely pair begin to fight back against the evil King Salomar, and in doing so end up saving a black dragon. Having never seen another dragon, they are both intrigued yet wary of Roland, but Lana still uses her incredible healing talents to bring him back to good health.
Roland is sure Lana is one of the girls his kind have been seeking, lost as children. Lana is so much more than she knows, but then so is Roland. He has a secret--one that will shock Lana and Tor and change all their lives forever.
Ms. D’Arc’s third installment of her Dragon Knights series is as vivid and engrossing as her previous releases and reveals even more of the plot against the dragons and the people of Draconia. Once again, I was sucked into the imagery she builds with her words and I can’t help but want more and more from this world she has created.
THE ICE DRAGON is a story filled with emotion, and you can feel the pain and joys of all of its characters. In Lana, Ms. D’Arc has created a heroine who is a perfect combination of strength and naiveté; after all she has endured, the fact that she is still able to nurture and love both Tor and Roland is amazing.
As for Roland, what’s not to like, he’s half man and half dragon, sure, but he is so much more. The caring and guidance he provides for both Lana and Tor is tempered with enough strength and compassion that his a very appealing character. He is a man definitely used to getting what he wants and while he never demands that they follow him blindly, he conveys that message in his actions. He never exploits or belittles the fact that both Lana and Tor defer to him in most matters and it makes a very remarkable character indeed.
THE ICE DRAGON is a must-read for anyone who is a fan of Ms. D’Arc’s books. While it could be read as a standalone, I would encourage you to read all the books in the series for a fuller, more enriching read. THE ICE DRAGON is a recommended read for sure and a definite keeper.
