Edwina ‘Eddy’ Marks, a newspaper reporter, believes there is a reasonable explanation for everything.  However, her father believes that Lemurians, a race of beings with strange powers, live nearby in Mt. Shasta.  What Eddy is not aware of is that her hometown is the site of a vortex that lets demons cross over to Earth.  Eddy is also known for fostering pets and suffers when she has to give them up.  Her present dog is named Bumper, a pit bull-poodle mix.

Promised everlasting life, Dax took a chance and was thrown out of Abyss, losing his scales.  As he lay there, after being attacked by a creature with a four-pronged weapon, he passed out.  A live snake tattoo seemed to ripple against his skin, slithering across his thigh, over his groin and body, its head resting just above his human heart.  It holds his demonic powers of fire and ice to kill demons. The balance of good and evil was tipping towards evil.  Recognizing the danger, the people of Eden, unable to fight, hire fallen demons, like Dax, to battle for them. He has seven days to save Evergreen and its inhabitants.  But as he had entered Earth’s vortex, he had been blasted by a demon’s fireshot, which could have the consequence of turning his snake tattoo and his own powers against him.  He must battle the pain of the fireshot, as he struggles to complete his mission, saving life as we know it.

While Eddy was gone one weekend, everything went haywire, such as a garden gnome eating a neighbor’s cat.  However, Eddy believed there were other sane reasons for the strange events…that is, until she caught a garden gnome in her shed with a pitchfork prepared to stab the naked injured man lying on the floor.  Using the shovel, she smashed the gnome to pieces, unleashing a dark evil-smelling mist, which escaped out the door.  Cautiously approaching the man, she couldn’t believe how sexy he looked or the existence of Willow, a tiny, flickering fairy-like woman, from which he seemed to gather strength, flying around him.  After being fed and clothed, Dax explained his mission.  After seeing him kill several stone demons, she believed him.  With the demons now knowing the location of her home, she took Dax, Willow and Bumper to her father’s home.  Aware that Dax and Willow needed her in this unfamiliar world to complete their mission, but attracted to him, she had to keep reminding herself that he was just a sexy avatar; a demon in human form…that seemed to be attracted to her also.  After hearing from her the Lemurians not only resided in Mt. Shasta, but were also powerful demon fighters, plans were made for the foursome to travel to Mt. Shasta in hopes of obtaining help with their mission.  As they traveled into danger, Dax wondered if he would be able to leave the tempting Eddy behind when his short time was up.

Action-filled, DEMONFIRE, the first book in the DEMONSLAYERS series, starts out with a bang at page one, as Dax is attacked entering the Earth’s vortex…attacked by a garden gnome with a pitchfork, no less.  Already famous for her WOLF TALES series, author Kate Douglas now gives us this start to her new, exciting, paranormal series.  With the aid of his odd helpmates, Dax struggles against his pain, which Eddy is able to relieve, at least temporarily, as he tries to beat the clock, while completing his mission.  Filled with adventure, romance, suspense, an originally creative plot, demons, fairies, attacking garden gnomes and imagination, this story is a delight.  Now if I can just wait until September to get the next book in this series.  I highly recommend DEMONFIRE to anyone looking for a paranormal romance with plenty of adventure.
