Stephano Jacob Colson Notte, known as Jake, was born a mortal and had never wanted to be an immortal. His mortal mother married Roberto, an immortal, when Jake was young. Afterwards, Jake’s mother had been turned into an immortal by her new husband. She had offered to turn Jake when he was eighteen, but he had refused. Then a female immortal stabbed Jake in the chest during an attempt to seek vengeance against his boss Vincent Argeneau. In turn, Vincent had unselfishly used his one turn to make Jake into an immortal, thus saving his life. At the time, Jake had lived in California, but he had crawled off to Ottawa and tried to pretend it never happened. Needing a job change to go with his new life, one he could do at night, Jake became a bodyguard. Although he has never been a night person, he now has no choice. He has not seen his family or friends for three years, but now Vincent’s aunt by marriage, Marguerite, has arrived, needing help, and Jake cannot turn her down.

Nicole, a much sought after portraitist, is the niece of Marguerite’s mortal housekeeper. While growing up, Nicole had often helped her aunt with spring cleaning Marguerite’s home and had become like one of the family. Then during a visit to Italy, Nicole met and married Rudolfo Rossi after a whirlwind courtship. Things changed after the marriage. While he refused to work, he forced her to work day and night, tearing down her self-esteem in the process. When Marguerite saw what was happening, she gave Nicole a mental prod to leave him. But Rudolfo refuses to let go. Although their upcoming divorce will give him part of Nicole’s money, he wants it all. So he has already tried to kill his wife three times, but Nicole believes these events to be accidental.

With Nicole in total denial, Marguerite has been trying to find Rudolfo, hoping to wipe his mind and send him back to Europe, but so far, no one has been able to find him. Now that Rudolfo’s alleged 'accidents' have come to naught, he will have to try something else and Marguerite wants a bodyguard in place before something happens. Time is growing short as the divorce will be final in two weeks and after that, killing Nicole will not benefit Rudolfo. Although Nicole refuses to accept a bodyguard, she is in need of a cook/housekeeper and a yard guy, so Marguerite tells Nicole she knows someone who is all three wrapped into one…Jake.

Urged by Marguerite to read Nicole’s mind to get to know her issues, Jake is horrified to discover he cannot read her, which means she is his soul mate and Marguerite has set him up. Since Marguerite is known for her successful matchmaking, Jake begins to question Nicole’s story, but finds that everything Marguerite told him about her is true. However, when Nicole finds Jake deathly sick, they begin to wonder if he is also a target. Is Rudolfo behind the 'accidents,' or does someone else want them dead? Will they uncover their attacker’s identity before it is too late?

An intriguing tale, ONE LUCKY VAMPIRE, the nineteenth novel in New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands’ ARGENEAU series, is a suspense-filled, sensual paranormal romance that will keep you guessing right up until the end. As a fan of this series, I was thrilled to be able to revisit the characters from the previous books. All of these books are a standalone delight within themselves. However, I am sure that once you start reading, you will not be content until you have read the entire series. I waited eagerly for the release of Jake’s story and it proved to be well worth the wait. The secondary characters are enchanting, especially Marguerite, who manages, throughout the series, to know instinctively who belongs with whom, and offers subtle hints amid her successful attempts at matchmaking.

Infused with suspense, humor, danger, plot twists, engaging characters, matchmaking, romance and love, this story is a keeper. Ms. Sands’ ARGENEAU series was part of my introduction to the paranormal genre and I have been hooked on this series ever since. If you have not read any of this series, check out ONE LUCKY VAMPIRE for yourself. If you have, I am sure this book is already on your list of 'must reads'. At any rate, do not miss ONE LUCKY VAMPIRE!
