As Lonely River’s beta, Thomas Crawford has made it a point to appear affable and easygoing which is why people feel that they can hurl insults to his face and live to tell about it.  It’s a quality that allows him to handle pack issues before they get completely out of control and the Alpha has to get involved.  Unfortunately his ‘passiveness’ is also a big part of the problem in  his courtship with Charlotte.

Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Daniel is the proud owner of the Full Moon Saloon.  She’s well loved by everyone who knows her and takes the care of her employees very seriously.  She’s been aware of Thomas’s attempts at courting her but his approach is entirely too tame for her taste.  Lottie wants to see a more animalistic side to him – and she may just get her wish sooner than she expects.

A late night visit from the two other brothels in town complaining about Lottie’s operation and how it lures their girls away rubs Thomas the wrong way.  He’s well aware that Lottie’s business is top notch and the girls who work for her are well protected so as far as he’s concerned these complaints are completely unfounded.  That he will have to bring this potential problem to Lottie’s attention is the only good part about the whole situation because any time he gets to spend with her he treasures.  This time is different though because he’s frustrated and he lets his more aggressive side show – and Lottie couldn’t be more thrilled.  Finally Thomas has captured Lottie’s attention but will his investigating the complaints of the other brothel owners drive a wedge between them and make any sort of relationship impossible?

ANTE UP is the third story in Moira Rogers DOWN & DIRTY series.  Thomas and Lottie have been engaging in this courtship dance throughout this series so I was quite anxious for them to have their own story and finally reach some sort of resolution.  Lottie is a motherly type figure whose need for a mate is touching but she doesn’t want gentlemanly.  She wants her mate to be aggressive and predatory so all Thomas’s gentle courting has been sweet but not what Lottie really needs.  Their relationship turns hot fast once they both begin to lose their temper over the whole situation with the other brothel owners.  The resentment of the other brothel owners culminates in a dramatic scene which beautifully depicts the strength and determination of both these characters and leaves you anxious to find out what will happen next.
