Seth Anderson has been forced to lead a solitary existence. Seth is damaged and his very nature makes him dangerous not only to other Nightkin but humans as well. When he shifts he becomes a ravager; a monster that destroys anything in his path. Seth has no desire to hurt anyone, therefore has no other choice but to hide what he really is. If he is discovered any Nightkin he comes across are duty bound to destroy him.

Briar, Ohio has no other Nightkin which makes it the perfect place to live as far as Seth is concerned. Seth may have accepted his fate but for a werewolf living alone is almost unbearable. He craves companionship and contact with people so when he meets Rafe at a local bar he jumps at the chance to be with him. The big, muscular man is as kind as he is beautiful and he makes Seth feel safe. Although, he knows their relationship can’t last, he decides to take whatever Rafe offers and be grateful for their time together.

While, on a trip to Washington D.C. Seth’s past suddenly comes back to haunt him. He unknowingly trespasses on another packs territory and is forced to defend himself and his lover. Seth doesn’t know how much longer he can keep his secret from Rafe. He knows the other man deserves the truth but he doesn’t want to lose him and go back to being alone. He can only hope that Rafe will somehow accept the monster that lives inside him.

LONE is now my favorite story from author Rowan McBride. Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop. Mr. McBride’s new novel is a captivating and refreshing take on the werewolf romance genre. I was immediately drawn into this new and vibrant world by the author’s descriptions. The plot is engrossing and kept me reading long into the night.

Seth and Rafe have an interesting and complex dynamic. Left to themselves they get alone well together but when the reality of Seth’s situation is revealed things between them become strained. Seth both intrigued and saddened me, especially his attempts to understand Rafe. He is so alone and he has so much trouble relating to Rafe and the world that Rafe takes for granted. He has never been taught to socialize with others properly and he is terrified of  hurting the only person he has ever cared about because he thinks he is dangerous and incapable of love.

Rafe is also an intriguing character. He is shocked by the existence of the supernatural. He realizes that he really doesn’t know his lover as well as he thought. I admired his stubbornness and determination throughout the story. No matter what happens Rafe refuses to give up on Seth and their relationship and he will not let Seth give up either. During the story they share a few very passionate and tender moments that helped them remain connected to one another. I came to care about both of these characters and I cheered them on until the end.

LONE is an exciting novel with a dark edge but it is also hopeful and moving. It is definitely a keeper!
