Anya is accompanied at all times with her medium, Sparky. Sparky is a salamander and ever-present. Although Anya adores and relies on Sparky, she feels a sense of isolation with him always being around.
Anya is currently investigating some very strange arsons that are taking place leading up to Devil's Night, an historically bad time in Detroit. Her co-workers in this investigation don't show a lot of respect for her, knowing that she works with DAGR at night. She makes the decision to stop working with DAGR.
As she comes closer to putting things together about the fires taking place, she comes closer to realizing that her powers as a Lantern and her knowledge of psychic realms makes her essential to solving the case.
Anya's character struck me right from the start. Her character was so isolated and Laura Bickle made me feel that very strongly. You learn of her devastating loss of her mother at a young age and although her love and need of Sparky is strong, you definitely understand her reluctance to try to form relationships with men.
The story is well written and you can feel the emotions that Anya is going through. Should she get closer to Brian, her co-worker at DAGR, or is it easier to just walk away? And what is it about Drake Ferrer that is so compelling? He is the only other Lantern that she has ever encountered, but he is using his powers for a more evil course. I will definitely look forward to reading the next installment of Anya's compelling story.
