Regency society and damned blood drinkers? I wasn't sure how or if this was going to work, but the author made this seem believable. This enjoyable book shows us a side to Jane Austen we always wondered about, but never knew.
The fact that the author is English means that though the language isn't Austen's English that it succeeds in keeping true to the spirit of Ms. Austen's writing. So there was unfortunately no modern eroticism, which I was rather hoping to encounter.
I felt that the author concentrated so much on the plot that there wasn't enough time spent on the romance. It can't have been easy for the author to have a book with characters that are blatantly having sex, to avoid being in any way explicit. Perhaps because the previous novel focused on the romance between Jane and Luke, I think this book suffered a bit in comparison. You can read this book as a standalone, but you will understand the romance and the character of the Damned better if you have read the previous book.
