ICE SONG is about a mother, Sorykah Minuit, trying to rescue her abducted twin babies, Ayeda and Leander, from a mad man only known as “The Collector.” Sorykah is “A Trader” who is a person who can change genders. This fact makes the world doubly dangerous for her as she tries to keep her secret safe. Not only is being “A Trader” dangerous, but when Sorykah takes on her male half, Sorykh, she cannot maintain her memories as a woman. Each change is like arousing with a shock from a dreamless slumber. She must learn to embrace her male half in order to save her children from “The Collector” before it is too late. This incredible mother will face unbelievable hazards and tests as she travels across the frozen land of this fantasy world.
What an achievement for a first-time author! Kirsten Imani Kasai’s debut novel, ICE SONG, had me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. It was hard for me to believe that this was the first time she had published a novel. Her writing was as fluid and skilled as that of an experienced author. Kasai has created a stunning, hazardous, and complex world with a heroine/hero who is strong and utterly believable. The characters are brilliant, eccentric, authentic and vividly described. ICE SONG was fascinating, and the characters were incredibly well-written. Each character, from Sorykah/Sorykh to the wicked Collector, had so much intensity. Kasia is already in the process of writing a sequel, which is still untitled, and I cannot wait to read it!
