Nikos, the Keeper of Secrets, is Anubis’ personal priest. Nikos had been sent to infiltrate the Bast Sect compound to learn the location of a package Bast left behind. For Nikos the mission is far more personal. He and Kat had shared a special relationship centuries earlier when they’d served and protected Bast, but Kat doesn’t remember him at all.
Upon arriving at the underground passages beneath the Las Vegas Strip Kat is summoned to Ra’s presence. The last thing she expects is to walk into a Ra’s presence and be faced with a canine who has the ability to steal into her mind. Nikos is chained to a wall and being beaten mercilessly. Kat hasn’t been acknowledged as a priestess in ancient Egypt in a very long time so to have a dog mentally call her Aait-Sheshesta is shocking. How does he know who she is and more importantly why is she suddenly experiencing flashbacks of loving him? Nikos can’t understand how it is that Kat doesn’t remember him or their time together but after she saves his life and helps him escape the compound they embark on an adventure to find Bast’s organs and ensure she can finally pass into the afterlife. In doing so Kat’s memories begin to return and her love for Nikos returns. Their adventure takes them back to ancient Egypt and there’s danger lurking at every turn trying to keep them from completing their task.
The writing team known as Gabriella Hewitt tell an exciting tale full of shapeshifters, ancient Egyptian beliefs and suspense with their story HEART OF THE NILE. If you’ve ever wondered where the battle between cats and dogs originated then you might find this tale to not only be fun, but downright interesting. I loved the animalistic traits of both the main characters and was fascinated by their journey into the underground ancient Egyptian. There’s tons of snarling and growling along with fur flying to keep readers amused while they immerse themselves in the mysteries involving Bast’s death and Kat’s memory loss.
