Tarn is an outcast Frost Giant and even though he loves the frigid weather that comes with winter he despises the gay festivities and rambunctious excitement that most people consider simply holiday cheer.  Even the smells of feasts being prepared annoy him and therefore he leaves his home to seek out a quiet wintery wonderland where he can be alone and not have to endure everyone’s gaiety.

His wandering has led him to the perfect place to enjoy his enforced time away from home.  Icicles, snow covered ground, a frozen lake and most importantly nobody celebrating asinine winter holidays.  The northernmost land, Old Man Winter’s domain, however, is untouched by these frivolities and sheer bliss as far as Tarn’s concerned.  The only trouble is there’s an intruder in what he considers his private little haven.

Old Man Winter is never able to join in the festivities after blanketing the area in beautiful snow.  For some reason people are uncomfortable around him – that couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that the icon could overpower any creature in the magical world.  He’s certainly surprised to discover that anyone has been brave enough to venture into his territory especially once Tam indulges him in a little water sports in the freezing cold lake. The playful nature and sexual attraction between them is enough to warm the coldest of hearts – even if they do prefer everything to be icy cold.

Kate Hill’s SUGAR PLUMS is a wonderful addition to the Changeling Press’s GINGERSNAPS line but it’s also one of the storylines that help make up Ms. Hill’s HOT RIVER series.  While we typically refer to sexual encounters as being hot or scorching there’s nothing smoldering or ablaze here.  Why not, you wonder? Because the characters thrive in cold temperatures and even their sexual encounters are frigid – but in a good way.  I loved how Tam and Old Man Winter fulfilled a need for each other that neither of them realizes that they had.  Loneliness can be downright depressing especially during the holidays and it would have been for these two solitary men if they hadn’t met up at such a pivotal point in time.
