Annabelle Lee should be a pro at coping with devastation, as she’s had to deal with it long before the fairies came to town. Her immunity to the venom has landed her with a job for Fairy Containment and Control, collecting fairy samples and working alongside law enforcement to collect evidence outside of the fairy proofing of the iron barricades surrounding the town. Alcohol and sleeping pills help her to get through rougher days, and her relationship with sexy detective Cane Cooper constitutes as one of the few good things in her life.
When a murdered six-year-old girl turns up in the bayou, Annabelle is drawn into the investigation. The FBI sends in a team to aid the local police department – one of which is Annabelle’s ex-boyfriend, Hitch. As things unravel, Annabelle finds herself in hot water due to a location mix-up, a friend blamed for the child’s murder and some not so pristine secrets about the little girl’s family, who happens to be one of the most prominent figures in town. Working so closely with her ex brings emotions to the surface that were never quite buried, even though she has a good thing going with her current lover. Annabelle must sort out her feelings for Hitch as well as determine where things with Cane stand and help solve the murder case before they all end up as the next bodies found in the toxic swamps.
DEAD ON THE DELTA is the start of Stacey Jay's dark urban fantasy series of fairies gone bad – very bad. It pops with gritty goodness. The Dystopian-like world and Ms. Jay's unique creations pull you in. I appreciated the nuances of the characters and how all of their flaws seemed to mesh together in accord with the backdrop’s remains. From the first page, I was torn between feelings of being a bit grossed out and totally mesmerized - I loved it! After picking up this book you'll never look at fairies the same way again.
