Elena O’Rourke has always looked up to her father and his admirable career choice. Now she is determined to gain the same respect he was graced with and obtain her own detective badge. When the Meiers Corner Police Department gets a call in for an unusual homicide they dub “The Case of the Punctured Prick”, Elena jumps at the opportunity to solve the crime. Things aren’t going so great though. For all her questioning, no one seems willing to spill any beans and the suspects are piling up faster than ice melts on a summer day. Added to the aggravation is that Bo Strongwell just happens to keep showing up unexpectedly, all through out her investigation.

Viking turned vampire Bo Strongwell lives by his sense of honor and duty, which is to protect those of his household and track down rogue vampires. He spends his nights on patrol, safeguarding the neighborhood. When a corpse drained of blood turns up in town, he knows his troubles are just beginning. The last thing he needs is a bunch of humans from the MCPD nosing about. Especially one by the name of Elena O’Rourke who tempts him in ways he’s never known.

Elena can’t deny Bo gets her motor running and may be the key to ending her five year dry spell in the sack. However, she suspects he knows more than he’s letting on. Still, it takes all of Elena’s strength to resist the “do me” vibes wafting off of him every time their paths cross. Bo’s dying to sink his teeth, and other parts into Elena, but is weary of disclosing what he truly is to her. He’s also trying to keep her out of harm’s way from things she’s only dreamed about and the attraction is a distraction to getting his job done. Bo tries to persuade her to take a step back from the case, but the gung ho would-be detective isn’t letting it rest that easily. Soon they find themselves thrown together in the hunt for the killer, with Bo keeping her at arms length about the supernatural aspects. With vampire baddies closing in though, she won’t be in the dark for long. There is a lot at stake for the two to find love and save the day in the small town of Meiers Corners.

Be prepared to be taken in by an immortal Viking vampire and one fiery female wannabe detective in Mary Hughes’s BITE MY FIRE.  Ms. Hughes delivers the eagerly awaited prequel to her hit debut BITING NIXIE. Crass humor, smoldering chemistry, and a wicked-good plot, along with the quirky characters and hottie vamps, are what make this such a rockin’ read.  I fell in love with all the oddball citizens of Meiers Corner and the unique tough girl heroines that, not so gracefully, take over the pages but edge a soft spot into your heart all the same. If you like women who can stand their own, blunt jokes, sexy male companions, and save-the-day action, this is definitely a read for you.
