Dawn is a half-breed unlike any other, born to a human mother and fathered by Morpheus, the King of the Dream Realm.  Long ago Dawn turned her back on her true father and his world, blocking them away and living as though she were fully human.  At twenty-eight, Dawn is now a sleep psychologist, and about to be plunged back into the realm to which she swore never to return.

Noah Clarke is an eccentric artist and a patient of Dawn’s.  A lucid sleeper, Noah has the remarkable ability to change his dreams.  Noah is also gorgeous, intelligent, charming, and all around the kind of man that can make Dawn want to eschew the doctor/patient ethics.  But when Noah claims his dreams are trying to kill him – the day after Dawn herself is attacked in a dream – Dawn knows she must face her father for the sake of both herself and the man she’s falling for.

Drawn into a battle with a Night Terror who has set his sights on Dawn and Noah, the half-breed who was never supposed to exist must now take her rightful place as a Nightmare, one who protects dreamers, before it’s too late.

Known for both her historical regency and vampire romances, author Kathryn Smith’s novel BEFORE I WAKE is her first contemporary novel as well as the first book in her Nightmare Chronicles series.  I will admit to being a huge fan of Smith’s Brotherhood of the Blood novels, so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed the premier of this new series.  She easily brings her passionate characters and flair for the paranormal into the modern world.

I found the dream realm to be fascinating; the descriptions were easily pictured, and the set up for those who lived there was enough to keep the reader connected and the story moving forward while still intriguing the reader about what will be revealed in further novels.  Likewise Dawn’s talents and abilities in the dream world developed for the story that is told, but there’s a lot of potential for growth in her character’s Nightmare role.  Dawn and Noah made a great couple.  I enjoyed seeing how their relationship progressed in the face of such extraordinary circumstances, and can’t wait to see what happens next for them.  All in all I found this to be a solid start to a promising series, and will be happily anticipating book number two.
