Back in New York, and testing her new wings, taking risks, and back on the vampire hunt, Elena Deveraux is relishing her life once again. However, it all changes when a vampire attacks a local girls’ school, the very same school her younger half-sisters attend. It is a horrendous attack, leaving two little girls brutalized and dead. Elena is on the case but she is starting to realize that there is more going on than a vampire attack. Something is coming alive and it is changing even her own archangel, Raphael.

Raphael knew the day would come when he would have to face down his mother, Caliane, but he never thought her reawakening would be so devastating to those around him, to the vampires who honor him. Will he have the strength to face her down, especially as she continually puts his beloved consort into danger? Elena is his heart but Caliane is his mother. Is there even a choice for Raphael?
ARCHANGEL’S CONSORT is the latest book in Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series. This is a series you definitely want to read in order because the characterization, the world building, and the story arcs all build upon the first book in the series. Elena and Raphael are finally coming to terms with their relationship and have settled in for the long haul, despite Elena’s mortal heart and fledgling immortality. Raphael wants to protect her while Elena knows she can handle more than he will allow. They have to compromise on the issue since both have very strong opinions about what to expect. They are also fighting an enemy that will go to great lengths to hurt Raphael and Elena. However, these are strong characters that are passionately in love and will defy the odds to protect that relationship.
In addition to Raphael and Elena, the cadre of seven is present and holds a strong presence in this story. They are with Raphael in any battle and are grudgingly giving Elena respect and courtesy. I enjoyed revisiting the world of the Guild Hunters and Archangels. ARCHANGEL’S CONSORT is a powerful reminder of just how amazing Nalini Singh’s writing and talent is. These characters come alive and you would almost expect to see them swooping and soaring in the sky right now. Fortunately, this author’s imagination continues to soar to new heights and I cannot wait to see where she is going to take this series next.
