AGONY/ECSTASY: ORIGINAL STORIES OF AGONIZING PLEASURE/EXQUISITE PAIN, edited by Jane Litte, is an entertaining anthology of edgy, provocative BDSM erotica. The entire collection, comprised of “11 stories of agonizing pleasure and 10 stories of exquisite pain”, lends itself to enough variety to satisfy any readers’ favorite sub-genre – paranormal, Regency, science fiction, fantasy, gay romance… the list goes on. Exclusive romance readers, however, should be forewarned that not all stories promise happy-ever-afters. But if you’re like me and a perpetual optimist, there are hints of hopeful happy endings if you’re willing to read between the lines.

Although I can’t delve into each and every narrative in this review, I’ve included a few to whet your appetite.
TRANSFIXED and TRANSFORMED by Anne Calhoun acts as a great two-part introduction to the kind of erotic BDSM stories to be explored throughout the book. Marin and Cole have been matched by a very special agency, her Dom to his Sub. But other than the occasional nightly liaison, they’re strangers to one another… until one night, when Cole finagles Marin to open herself up to him and look at him as more than just a casual tryst. Well done.
In RESCUE ME by Meljean Brook, Jenny has been kidnapped by a serial killer and left in an old cabin in the woods to await her fate. Luckily, she was on the phone with a close friend and secret crush, Ian, when she was taken. Still, he has no way of finding her, so the ultimate escape will be all on her. As she frantically works to loosen her bindings, Jenny fantasizes about Ian, who in her mind is both fulfilling her sexiest desires and urging her towards freedom. Great, great story.
SILVERHOUSE by Sarabeth Scott is super duper tantalizing. Although Christoph and Clara’s relationship is obviously one of domination and submission, there is an amazing affinity between them that goes beyond the foreplay and sex. The trust, understanding, and acceptance between the lovers are beautiful things. There’s a little surprise at the end that will assuredly endear the couple even more.
CAGED by J.K. Coi is an amazingly haunting tale of a captured werewolf used for training human agents tasked with fighting off his brethren. This story, in particular, contains such a twist that I was left screaming for more. Wonderfully emotionally charged, this story also fed the adrenaline junkie in me. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
INTO THE RED by Cameron Belle is an interesting and creative take on the gladiator theme, with none of the scorching sensuality lost in a story fraught with violence, survival, and immediate gratification. Contains male/male coupling.
In SHAMELESS by Edie Harris, Caro, a young socialite, gives her maidenhead in a moment of weakness to her fiancé before marriage, only to be treated like a mistress afterward. Angry, tired of her fiancé’s mistreatment, and still grieving, Caro takes a stranger up on his offer – he is not only willing to let her take her violent frustrations out on him, but he enjoys it. Caro turns an otherwise horrible situation into an eye-opening epiphany.
For a more light-hearted take on the BDSM element, SAFEWORD by Delphine Dryden provides a friends to lovers story… with paddling. Ashley and Nathan’s revelations about one another, as well as their secret feelings for one another, are sweet, sincere, and uber-delicious.
AGONY/ECSTASY is an excellent initiation into the world of BDSM erotica for readers unsure if this is something for them. But it’s also diverse enough in its offering to pleasantly surprise long-time readers of the genre. Ms. Litte has done a fine job in compiling and editing an anthology that caters to just about everyone’s personal taste.
