Lord Gabriel Sharpe, the third son of the Marquess of Stoneville and his siblings lost their parents when he was only seven years old. It was surmised that their mother had shot her father accidentally and then turned the gun on herself. But recently, some new information has come to light that has them looking further into the matter. After his parents’ death, he was determined that Death would not get him. Knowing that Death swooped in upon seeing any sign of weakness, Gabe’s bold, but reckless, ways soon had him dubbed the Angel of Death. Raised by their grandmother, the wild bunch has become known as the Hellions of Halstead. So their grandmother has given them an ultimatum; unless they are all married by the year’s end, they will all be cut off without a dime. In case of such an event, Gabe is trying to obtain thoroughbred horses to breed and race, to his grandmother’s dismay, so he will have income. He has always loved spending time out in the stables, helping to groom the horses. With three of his siblings recently married, the only ones left to fulfill the ultimatum is Gabe and his younger sister, Celia, who is adamantly against marriage. Seven years ago, Gabe’s best friend, Roger, died while racing him. Feeling remorseful about his friend’s death and the financial straits in which it left Roger’s sister, Gabe is determined to come to her aid by marrying her. The marriage will also further fulfill his grandmother’s demands. However, first he will have to persuade the woman to marry him.

Virginia Waverly had only been three when her parents were killed in a boating accident. She had gone to live with her grandfather, General Waverly, whom she calls Poppy. Now twenty, Virginia has been upset with Gabe since her brother, Roger’s, death. Seeking vengeance, she has been trying to get Gabe to race against her. Most of the information she has received about the race in which she lost her brother, has come from Poppy, who was not even present at the race. But his anger at Gabe has only fueled her quest for vengeance. She has been trying to find out the true details of what happened the day of the fatal race, but Gabe will not discuss it.

Although Virginia has not been able to get Gabe to agree to race against her on the same treacherous course that killed her brother, he has agreed to race against her on a tamer course. The bet for this race is that if Gabe wins, she agrees to let him court her, but if she wins, he will have to race against her again on the more treacherous course. A stolen kiss prior to the race only confuses Virginia. How can she have such longing for the man who killed her brother?  When her second cousin Pierce also proposes to her, things get interesting. Further, she believes that Gabe only wants to marry her to gain his inheritance while she only wants to marry for love. Will Gabe be able to win her, despite her grandfather’s hatred of him and his grandmother’s ultimatum?

A fast-paced read, TO WED A WILD LORD, the fourth novel in talented author Sabrina Jeffries’ HELLIONS OF HALSTEAD HALL series, is a witty and action-packed historical romance. The story will draw you in right from the beginning and hold your interest right up to the last page. Gabe and Virginia are alike in many ways; both are a bit wild and reckless and though Virginia tries to fight it, their desire for each other is mutual. Although his inheritance would help him, Gabe really does not care whether he gains it or not. His one concern is for his younger sister, Celia, who is adamantly against marriage. He had made a pact with her that they would hold out together against their grandmother’s ultimatum. But he cannot resist Virginia, although it makes Celia feel as if he has deserted her. The mystery of his parents’ death running in the background of the story even as Virginia also tries to uncover the real story behind her brother’s death. The characters are compelling and the secondary characters add further appeal to the story. With clever banter, danger, steamy situations, intrigue, an interesting plot, murder, romance and true love, TO WED A WILD LORD will keep readers intrigued right up to the very satisfying ending. Fans of this series will also be brought up-to-date on the characters from the previous books. Still this story can be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading Celia’s story in Ms. Jeffries’ next novel, A LADY NEVER SURRENDERS, which is due out in January.
