Jessica Sullivan, a stage actress in 1885 San Francisco, had eloped and married Everett Dunne at eighteen. But, she didn’t enjoy his constant need for passion, and he abandoned her soon after the birth of their sickly infant who died shortly thereafter. All that happened six years ago, and Jessica believes herself “passionless.” This belief comes into question after she meets Leland Montgomery.

Leland Montgomery, born of Boston aristocrats, spurned society and makes his living as a gambler. He has a reputation with the ladies, including Jessica’s best friend, Michelle Dubois (no, she’s not really French), so when Jessica brands him a scoundrel, she’s not far off the mark. Circumstances throw the two together, and readers will enjoy following the two on their adventures through betrayal, flight, murder and much more.

Denise Eagan will captivate historical fiction fans with THE WILD ONE, the companion book to her debut novel, WICKED WOMAN. While related, the two stories can stand alone. Ms. Eagan explores society at all its levels in San Francisco in the 1880s where rules dictate one’s friends and, most assuredly, one’s marriages. Montgomery has a reputation with the ladies, but he doesn’t spend time with women of his class. A consummate bachelor though, he feels the pressure to marry because his brother’s wife has thus far not produced a son. But he would do much damage to his family name if he even considered marrying Jessica.

With realistic dialogue and wonderfully fun as well as thoughtful characters, Ms. Eagan leads readers on a merry chase in this novel. Once picked up, there are few good stopping points. Fast-paced and filled with action, it’s a must-read for romance fans and has some extra-sexy scenes for added spice. I look forward to reading future novels by Ms. Eagan.
