As a child, Ginesse Braxton escaped the reality of her life with six little brothers through her books where men were gallant and courageous. With a penchant for reckless behavior, which managed to get her into trouble, she was banished to a boarding school in England, leaving behind Egypt. In England, she even wrote of her misadventures and managed to have one published. But, trying to establish an academic reputation, she kept that part of her life to herself. With a degree in ancient history, Ginesse was working as a glorified clerk for Professor Lord Tynesborough when she made a discovery. She found a clue to the location of the lost city of Zerzura. Although he put it down to wishful thinking and asked her out to dinner, he subsequently began looking into it himself. Quitting her job, she continued her research and after many months of work, she had pieced the puzzle together. But she has to beat the professor to the site. With both parents and some of her siblings having already made a name for themselves in their own scientific fields, she wants to step out from their shadows and prove herself. Locating the lost city would be the discovery of a lifetime. It would certainly boost her career and make her family notice her as more than a troublemaker.

Escaping his grandmother’s disdain and manipulations in her attempts to enhance their stand in society, Jim McCoy joined the foreign legion. At twenty, penned down in the desert, Jim barely escaped as his men were all been killed. He only survived because Colonel Lord Pomfrey, a man he did not know or like, had come to his rescue. Jim does not have a title and has a reputation for being disreputable with questionable morals. He is known as an artifacts dealer with a gun for hire, but he does have a code of honor that he always sticks to and cannot wait to fulfill his obligation to the colonel. He has been waiting for several years to fulfill his debt.

Without a plan in sight, Ginesse starts out on her voyage to Egypt with no idea of how she will get to the site she has been researching. While on the ship she fortuitously makes the acquaintance of Miss Mildred Whimpelhall, who suffers greatly from sea sickness. Her new friend is on her way to join her fiancé Colonel Lord Pomfrey, who is stationed thirty miles from Ginesse’s research site. Always curious about other people’s lives, Ginesse learns a great deal about Miss Whimpelhall. So when the sick woman’s mal de mer becomes too much, she leaves the ship to travel by land, giving Ginesse an ingenious idea. She will switch places with Miss Whimpelhall and meet the woman’s guide. The letter that Mildred carries has given Ginesse all of the information about the guide, Jim McCoy, a ruffian cowboy, she needs. Once he gets her to the fort, she will figure out how to get to the research site.

Eager to get out from under his obligation to Pomfrey, Jim is happy when the professor finally calls in his marker. Jim is to escort Miss Whimpelhall across the hostile desert to her fiancé, Pomfrey. But little does he know that the woman he is escorting is Ginesse, although he notices that her personality does not quite fit the information he was given. The woman that he meets is prone towards romance, sassy, opinionated, unable to stay out of trouble and impulsive…not at all resembling a woman that Pomfrey would choose, at least to Jim’s estimation. However, falling in love with the woman was not part of Jim’s deal with the colonel, nor is it honorable, but he can’t seem to help himself. Which will win in the end, his honor regarding this engaged woman or his love for her? Can Ginesse find the site before she is recognized by her childhood nemesis, Haji, who is helping Jim, or before the real Mildred shows up again? With her own love for her guide blossoming, how will she explain her deception to Jim, who has his own code of honor?

A fun read set in early twentieth century Egypt, THE OTHER GUY’S BRIDE, the latest novel by gifted author Connie Brockway, is an action-packed historical romance that you will hate to see end. Filled with surprising plot twists and turns, secrets, adventure, danger, passion, humor, clever repartee, sexual tension, steamy situations, interesting characters and romance, this story is a truly enjoyable read. This wonderfully written sequel to Ms. Brockway’s novel AS YOU DESIRE, which has taken several years to be written, is well worth the wait. Ginesse is the daughter of the hero and heroine of the earlier book. The unusual setting of Egypt gives this novel a fresh outlook, and I cannot wait to read Ms. Brockway’s next novel. Do not miss THE OTHER GUY’S BRIDE!
