Geneen Armstrong’s life changes forever when Britt MacKinnon, captain of the Scottish king’s guard, appears at her front door. He needs her to come back to the royal castle because the king has requested her favors. Geneen is in a terrible place because it is not Geneen the king wants, but her twin sister, Greer, who is currently pregnant with the king’s baby. Geneen is not used to duplicity, but to protect her sister and the baby, she will pretend to be Greer.

Britt did not become the king’s guard on a whim. He is a smart man who knows that something is not quite right with Greer. She is not the frivolous, simple woman he remembers. Whoever he is escorting, it is not the king’s mistress. When he discovers Geneen’s ruse, he is afraid for her and what will happen when the king discovers the truth. But before that can happen, danger is on their path. The queen has sent her loyal servant to deal with the king’s mistress. Even as they best one foe, another is on their path, looking to hurt Geneen. By the time they arrive at the castle, the situation has become even graver. Will Geneen and Britt find a way to protect each other amidst the lies and schemes of the king’s court?
THE KING’S MISTRESS is a historical with a touch of modernity. Though it has a historical setting and there is plenty of danger, I liked that I could connect with Britt and Geneen through the language of the story. It had a modern flavor to it that helped ease me into the historical setting, the rules of the court and all the various machinations of the characters. Through it all though, Britt and Geneen remain true to each other. They fall in love quickly but all the tension and danger adds to their protectiveness of each other. They are both intelligent characters who will do what it takes to protect each other, and Greer, though she does not always deserve it. These two have strength running through their blood and it adds sizzle to their growing love for each other. Geneen has always abhorred love, sure that it would prove to be her downfall, like her mother before her. Britt has been badly scarred by love so he is reluctant at first to express his feelings. Fortunately, outside motivations help to move their relationship forward, despite the villainy of the queen and her cohorts. THE KING’S MISTRESS has a great action plot and two interesting lead characters who would give their lives for each other.
