Once more Lady Julia Grey Brisbane is trying to involve herself in one of her husband, Nicholas Brisbane’s, investigations. Recently married, they have returned from their honeymoon and have set up housekeeping, combining their two households into one. Lady Julia has taken up a couple of new hobbies, like photography and explosives. Never one to take no for an answer, she is especially determined to get involved when she happens upon the fact that her husband’s newest client is none other than her oldest, stuffy brother, Lord Bellmont. Her brother has gotten himself into a bit of a fix and has turned to Brisbane to help him. The married Bellmont has managed to involve himself in an indiscretion and has made matters worse by writing to the lady in question, thus providing written proof. With Bellmont being an important Member of Parliament and his mistress possibly involved in working for a foreign government, their relationship could be far reaching, even causing a problem for the British government. Determined not to be left out of her husband’s investigation, especially one in which her family is involved, Julia follows him and winds up at the Ghost Club, disguised as a man. But before the night is over, someone at the séance will die. Has Julia finally gotten herself into more danger than she can get out of? With Julia and Brisbane butting heads, will this be the investigation that destroys their marriage, or will they find a way to work together in harmony?

An intriguing novel, THE DARK ENQUIRY, the fifth book in talented author Deanna Raybourn’s series, is a witty, adventure-packed historical romance. This story discloses more of Brisbane’s past as he confesses more of it to Lady Julia, even though he fears that eventually she may leave him due to his past. Lady Julia is desperate to help her husband in his investigations so she can involve herself further in his life. Her one fear is that he will tire of her and leave her. As for Brisbane, Julia is his life and he fears that he will lose her, especially since she always seems to be in the midst of danger, whether it is blowing things up or confronting killers. However, the couple is very romantic together. They make a terrific twosome, even in the face of danger. Espionage, blackmail with a trace of the supernatural, romance, plot twists, humor, mystery, danger, gypsies, spies and murder all combine in this well written, well-paced novel. As I look forward to Ms. Raybourn’s next addition to this amazing series, be sure to get your own copy of THE DARK ENQUIRY!
