When she was younger, Mairi MacGregor had dreams of being Connor Grant’s wife. That was all she wanted. She had been desperately in love with him, but when he left her to serve England’s Protestant King Charles, he broke her heart. Even though he had written and asked her to join him in England, she loved Scotland and could not bear to leave it. She has not seen him in seven years and thought she had put him out of her life and out of her mind. But tonight he has returned to Whitehall Palace. The rumors of his way with women have already reached her ears, and she hates him for making her lose her heart to him when she was still a young girl. Her brother Rob rescued King James’ daughter from Dutch admiral Peter Gilles, and the princess was on her way to Mairi’s home, Camlochlin. If the princess’ enemies follow her and attack Camlochlin, Mairi wants to be there to help stop them. Instead she is at Whitehall Palace with her parents and her brother Colin. Connor is there also. She had figured she could stay away from him until she returned home with her parents, but now her father has broken the news that she will not be going home with them yet. He wants her safe, away from the battle. But she knows how to wield a blade and is not afraid to face the enemy. In fact, she has done it before. Unbeknownst to her father, she and her brother Colin are part of the Highland rebel militia, who cut down Covenanters and Cameronians, those Scottish Presbyterians who were trying to make their religion the sole religion of Scotland. As the only daughter of Calum MacGregor, she had been denied the rigorous training that her three brothers had received, but that had not stopped her from learning how to wield a blade or shoot an arrow. Now that she and Colin are being forced to stay at Whitehall, she will be tripping over Connor frequently.

Captain Connor Grant’s mother Claire had been a rebel outlaw, fighting against the usurpers of her cousin Charles’ crown. Having lost four daughters at birth, his mother had taken Mairi under her wing, teaching her everything she knew about combat. To his regret, it was his mother Mairi wants to emulate. Connor is still deeply in love with Mairi, although he has tried to kill his love for her. Despite his reputation with the ladies, the only woman he wants is Mairi. The girl he had left behind is a woman now, but the main thing that has changed is her cold eyes. He had not wanted to leave Mairi years ago, but as the fourth cousin to the king, he had had no choice. It was his duty to serve, and he had accepted with pride. However, Mairi has never forgiven him for leaving her to serve under a Protestant king. Refusing to join him in England, she had left him with no choice but to let her go. It was what she wanted. So he had stayed away from Camlochlin and remained in the Army even after his required service was over. Loving her had helped him get through when things were the darkest.

Hoping to gain information for her fellow rebels, Mairi has been spending a lot of time with Henry de Vere, Lord Oxford. As a rebel, Mairi had once scarred Lord Oxford’s face, which kept women away from him. But he has not recognized her yet and is flattered by all the attention she is paying him. However, Connor does not understand why she is spending so much time with Lord Oxford and is jealous of the smiles she gives him while she harps at Connor every chance she gets. When her father leaves to go home, he asks Connor to keep an eye on Mairi, something he will gladly do. Connor is horrified to discover that Mairi is a member of the rebels and wants her out of harm’s way, but she refuses to listen. As his mother and the queen plot to get the quarreling, but obviously in love, couple together, Connor begins to realize that she is the only woman for him, but how can he convince her of his love? With a traitor in their midst, Mairi must team up with Connor, but can she keep her heart safe even though it craves to be with him?

An exciting read, TAMED BY A HIGHLANDER, the third book in talented author Paula Quinn’s CHILDREN OF THE MIST series, is a sensual, witty and fast-paced historical romance, which I hated to see end. Although they constantly argue, they cannot keep their eyes off of each other. The air practically sizzles with sexual tension whenever they are together. Brimming with surprising plot twists, scorching hot love scenes, witty repartee, danger, kidnapping, sinister villains, jealousy, romance, plenty of action and a second chance at love, this book is definitely a keeper. Phenomenal author Paula Quinn’s books are always on my ‘must read’ list. With attention to detail, compassionate characters and passionate romance, she brings the Scottish Highlands of yesterday to life. I highly recommend TAMED BY A HIGHLANDER. Do not miss it! If you enjoy this book, do not miss the other books in this series; RAVISHED BY A HIGHLANDER and SEDUCED BY A HIGHLANDER. The fourth book in this series, CONQUERED BY A HIGHLANDER is due out next summer.
