One of the last of her kind of witches, Serena knows she will remain alone thanks to a long-ago curse against her people. Nevertheless, she feels the pull of Lord Drogan and fears he will take her heart. Lord Drogan has his own internal battle to fight against an evil from his past that will soon catch up to him. On the brink of being engulfed by the darkness, Drogan can’t let himself love Serena, even though she represents the only pull of light in his life.
To save the family of Gerard, a near-brother to Drogan and close friend of Serena’s, the two must travel together which only brings them closer. Evil dogs their every step to Drogan’s home at Wolfglynn, and their passion and peril grow simultaneously.
Donna Grant has given a new twist to the historical paranormal romance with SHADOW MAGIC. She has written a nicely paced story of intrigue, danger and love. She deftly depicts her characters and their internal struggles: Serena fears a long-ago curse and Drogan must first admit witches exist and then take on the demons of his past. One of Serena’s abilities allows her to see two different futures for individuals depending on what decisions are made. No matter what she does though, she sees her own future as bleak. The reader wants the best for Serena and Drogan as well as the supporting cast.
SHADOW MAGIC is the first book in Grant’s SISTERS OF MAGIC trilogy, and she has laid a good foundation. She has introduced certain characters for us to glimpse, and I’m sure we will get to know them better throughout the series. I look forward to reading the next installment, ECHOES of MAGIC.
