Roselyn Longworth has fallen into a horrible trap. She has sacrificed herself to protect her brother, who has run off to another continent after stealing a great deal of money that was not his. She has offered herself to the one man who can stop the investigation and ultimately the search for her brother. She thought Lord Norbury would come to love and protect her. How wrong she was, and now she is the unwilling mistress to a man who wishes to degrade her because of her refusal to do what he wants in the bedroom.

Kyle Bradwell first saw Roselyn at the opera a few years ago and was enamored by her beauty. He knows all about what her brother has done, but when he goes to Lord Norbury’s home, he is shocked to see Roselyn there among some out of control party guests. Norbury condones these risqué antics and even auctions off Rose to the highest bidder. Kyle does the only thing a gentlemen like himself can do, and that is to pool together his money and place the highest bid. He is the winner and soon Rose is handed to him. She now believes Kyle to be her new master.

But Kyle doesn’t want to own Rose. He brings her to some of her loving family members thinking she will be in good care. But that doesn’t stop the vicious gossip about her reputation. Kyle can not stand to see Rose degraded any more than she already has been, and offers his hand in marriage. And since Rose is quite destitute, she accepts. Will their marriage be only convenience, and will Rose continue to lie for her brother and keep secrets from her new husband? Kyle wants so much to make their marriage a reality and would love nothing more to protect her from everything she has been through.

If you want to read a quality historical romance, look no further. Madeline Hunter’s name is well known to deliver mature and emotional reads. SECRETS OF SURRENDER just flows off the pages as Kyle and Rose try to get to know one another, even though the issue of trust keeps them at arms length. Because of an action by Rose’s brother Tim, she is the one to pay for his crimes. I really felt for Rose, but she comes across as a very strong young woman. And when Kyle comes to her rescue, you knew he is her knight in shining armor. Kyle is not the typical alpha heroes you usually read about, but a kinder and gentler man who puts all of Rose’s needs above his own.

There are some other wonderful characters who round out this story such as Rose’s lovely cousin Alexia and her husband Hayden who truly care for Rose’s welfare. Lord Norbury is a true villain and you await to see if he will get his just desserts in the end.

You can never go wrong when reading a Madeline Hunter novel and she shows it again with SECRETS OF SURRENDER.
