Miss Zephyr Ponsley is used to a life of travel and discovery. She has been helping her father discover plants for years. Unfortunately, while she is very wise to the academia of her father, she is not at all prepared for Bradshaw Carroway. He is brash, bold, and not quite the lout she expected him to be. In fact, Shaw quickly delights her with his intelligence and wit, though she works to hide it. But desire quickly blossoms in the seclusion of the sea. The question is, are they prepared to take their sea-faring love story back to the real world?
RULES OF AN ENGAGEMENT brings back a beloved Suzanne Enoch character in Captain Bradshaw Carroway. However, readers unfamiliar with him will have no trouble either as it is very easy to get to know him throughout the course of the story. He is a man who takes care of his crew, who is not afraid of hard work, and who will put himself in the line of fire. He also has shadows in his life that are slowly uncovered through Zephyr’s rather interesting personality. She is a woman who has not been raised in the streets of Mayfair. She does not know all the rules of etiquette but she does want a courtship and she makes Shaw work for it. It is both sweet and frustrating for both characters because they are not sure if they are doing the right things.
This book is set amidst the sea and some very primitive islands. It is the perfect adventure for historical readers who need something different than a London setting. Cannibals, wild animals, and cannon fire all add something a little different to this love story.
RULES OF AN ENGAGEMENT is sweet and spicy. Zephyr and Shaw seem like an unlikely pair but they find that their differences do not matter in the end. It is what the heart wants. And their hearts yearn to be together.
