Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Davenport’s feelings for her brother-in-law are anything but brotherly.  She’s ready to get intimate with Cal and has plans to marry him – eventually, but he has different feelings on the subject.  Beth is devastated when Cal disappeared leaving only a note stating that he was going to Chicago to live with his grandfather.  In the four years since that day she’s changed and isn’t about to forgive him for hurting her.

Cal Roberts is in love with Beth but he’s well aware that she’s not the sort of woman you dally with and then leave. Beth is a forever kind of gal and he’s not ready for marriage and kids.  He felt his only option is to leave and give her an opportunity to grow up some while he does the same.  Four years later, he may come to regret that decision because Beth isn’t the sweet doting young woman he remembers and she’s still very angry.

At his sister-in-law’s request Cal returns to Elk Valley while Wade, Skylar and their son are away traveling Europe and looking for finer breeding stock.  They’ll be away for several months so Skylar uses the excuse of wanting him to handle things while they’re away.  Only what she neglects to mention is that Beth has become engaged to the ranch foreman Nathan Carlyle.  There’s something disconcerting about the man and Cal certainly gets worrisome vibes from him but could it be that his dislike of the other man is because of his feelings for Beth?

Long time family friend and former gunslinger Joe Jackson clues Cal in to what’s been happening since he left Elk Valley and especially the engagement between Beth and Nathan.  After evaluating the situation and examining his own feelings, Cal’s determined that there will be no wedding to Nathan.  As far as he’s concerned Beth belongs to him and she always has – all he has to do is convince her of that fact.  The one thing he doesn’t anticipate is Nathan’s volatile and devious nature.  Can true love win in the end?

Ruth D. Kerce’s historical novel WANTON SURRENDER is a wonderful heartwarming love story that engages all the reader’s emotions.  My heart broke for Beth when Cal disappeared and I could fully understand her resentment and anger at him.  At the same time I was able to comprehend Cal’s belief that he was doing the right thing by leaving.  The love between these two is obvious but they’ve both made mistakes which they regret and will have to overcome.  Ms. Kerce installs plenty of romance, suspense, angst, a bit of the unexpected among characters who will live on in your memories long after you’ve read every page of this novel.

If you’re interested in reading about Skylar and Wade’s romance and the situations that brought them together as well as Skylar’s unique abilities then be sure to pick up a copy of WANTON TEMPTATION.
