Miss Helen Prestwick is determined to see her nephew William has his rightful place in society as the twelfth Earl of Camberwell.  Her sister Beatrice secretly married the eleventh Earl of Camberwell not long before he died in battle.  He never knew she was expecting their child, nor had he informed his family of his marriage.  When Beatrice dies from complications of childbirth, Helen sets out on her crusade with her six month old nephew and her duenna, Miss Barnstaple, planning to continue her work in art once William is installed in his rightful place.

Edward Beresford never wanted to inherit the earldom.  He was happy living a reclusive life with his books and his experiments.  Being the earl changed his life completely.  Now he is also expected to marry to secure the line by producing an heir.  His aunt is pushing their neighbor Elspeth at him.  However, marriage to her is an event he does not even want to contemplate.

When Helen shows up on Edward’s doorstep with her claims of William being the rightful heir and no discernable proof, Edward is skeptical.  As much as he doesn’t want to be earl, he is not willing to hand it over to an imposter without proof despite his attraction to Helen.  Therefore, he invites her to stay while he has the matter investigated.  With her love of art, Helen volunteers to catalog the Camberwell art collection to help pass the time, garnering the hatred of Edward’s uncle who has supposedly been cataloging the art for years.  As Edward and Helen are in daily contact, their attraction to each other grows.  However, she has kept a secret from Edward, which she is hoping to withhold until she can gain his trust, if only her enemies in the household do not get the information first.  Will this secret tear them apart or can she rely on him to stand by her?

MISS PRESTWICK’S CRUSADE is a truly intriguing and enjoyable read.  This historical romance combines witty dialogue, a suspenseful plot, fascinating characters and a virtuous romance into a novel that is hard to put down until the last page is turned.  This story has an innocence; it is not filled with the eroticism that is found in most books today.  I recommend MISS PRESTWICK’S CRUSADE to those who like less steam in their historical romances.
