Rionna McDonald isn’t a faint milk-n-honey lass.  She’s learned how to protect herself and thinks nothing of taking up a sword in defense of her clan or her own virtue.  She has no illusions that Caelen wants to marry her.  Both his brothers rejected her so why would she think that he’d feel any different.  He’ll marry her out of a sense of duty and she’ll do the same but dare she hope for more.  One of Caelen’s dictates is that she ‘behave as a female should’ and she’ll try to follow his orders even though she doesn’t agree with his reasoning – after all she’s more comfortable in men’s clothing and wielding a weapon.

 

Rionna and Caelen’s marriage is a complicated merger right from the start.  The simple fact that with this marriage Rionna’s father not only loses his title as laird but is also banished from the McDonald holdings is a huge indicator that there is trouble brewing.  The man is too volatile to take such an insult without retaliating.  Rionna is actually relieved to have Caelen taking over as the new laird but she is aware that there are going to be problems stemming from the changes that are sure to take place.  Rionna is torn between her love for her clan and her growing feelings for Caelen.  She’s a strong woman and not afraid to voice her opinion but Caelen doesn’t trust easily and he’s already been betrayed once.  He wants nothing more than to lead his new clan and perform his duty by Rionna but trusting her isn’t something he’s willing to do.  He’s been betrayed before and won’t put himself in such a position again.  Circumstances might put him in a position where he has to trust his heart and believe that Rionna’s allegiance belongs to him because to do otherwise would put her father and their enemies in a position of power and that’s something he cannot allow.

 

NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER is the final release in Maya Banks’ MCCABE TRILOGY.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each of the stories in this trilogy because the heroines are strong, daring characters who are willing to risk everything to gain the sort of life and love they desire.  The McCabe men are everything you could desire in Highland men.  They’re stubborn, sexy, opinionated… and a whole lot of fun when riled.  They’re also vulnerable when it comes to their loved ones and that makes them far more appealing in my opinion. 

 

In NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER readers who admired Rionna in the previous books in this series will discover exactly why she’s defied convention and learned how to be a warrior.  I was impressed with her before but after reading this I really adore her.  Caelen was overshadowed by his brothers in the first two books so it was nice to get the chance to know him better.  This story has it all – romance, betrayal, a bit of mystery, and an all-around fun ‘attitude.’
