It’s November 1905 and Dr. Jonty Stewart has just accepted a fellowship at his Alma Mater St. Bride’s College at Cambridge University. Unaware of certain customs, his very first night he makes the mistake of sitting in the seat of another fellow. Dr. Orlando Coppersmith is a very solitary and aloof individual but in spite of this Jonty takes an instant liking to the other man. Thus begins a surprising but vital friendship between two very different men.

A few months later their friendship is still going strong. Orlando is overjoyed by Jonty’s presence in his life because he has never had a friend before. For his part Jonty has realized that his feelings for Orlando have begun to deepen into something more. He can’t help but wonder how his friend would react if he knew. Before he can act on his feelings, however, a heinous crime shakes St. Bride’s College to its very core. Jonty and Orlando get drawn into the mystery. Will they survive to learn how to love one another?

LESSONS IN LOVE is the first novel in Charlie Cochrane’s CAMBRIDGE FELLOWS MYSTERY series. This novel drew me in from the very beginning. The style of the writing is very authentic for the time period in which the novel is set. The characters mannerisms and speech patterns also feel very realistic. The mystery is absorbing. I found myself reluctant to stop reading because I desperately wanted to know what would happen next.

However, the most intriguing aspect is the affect that the murders have on Jonty and Orlando. The reasons behind the murders hit very close to home for the two men and causes some interesting reactions. Jonty and Orlando are appealing and captivating characters. They are very different and yet they both find what they need most in one another. They are so cute together and their interactions often make me smile.

There are several sequels in the series I look forward to reading them.
