Cold, ruthless Julian Spenser, Marquess Dryden, also known as Lord Ice, has found the perfect bride in heiress Lisbeth Redmond. Her dowry will restore his damaged legacy and make his world right again. All of London watches for his next act. His name often comes up in the broadsheets due to his horse races and his recklessly high wagers. Many a Londoner has lost his fortune in his attempts to emulate Lord Ice. The Marquess of Dryden obtained the title when he was just seventeen at the death of his father. The estate was in bad financial shape, so he had to work hard to gain the wealth that the family now enjoys. With his stoic manner, he is also referred to as the Lord of Ice. He dreams of obtaining the one estate that had at one time should have been part of his inheritance. However, the only way he can get it back is to marry Lisbeth Redmond since the estate is part of her dowry. Although he does not love her, he has no problem marrying her. After all, she is a beautiful woman and seems to be very sweet. But that is before he meets Phoebe. She talks to him unlike any one else he knows.

Phoebe Vale, a teacher, taught young girls in the subjects of Latin, Greek, French and history by day at Miss Endicott’s Academy. But at night, she has her own secret vice…the broadsheets. Lord Ice haunted her imagination and she knew everything about him. Taken to the school when she was approximately ten-years-old, she was a recalcitrant child, so now she knows how to deal with similar girl, much to their chagrin. Although she has worked hard at overcoming these traits now that she is twenty-two, she still finds herself falling back into the same behavior, at times. She was governess to Lisbeth Redmond a few years ago, even though there is not much difference in their ages. With the holidays upon the academy, Phoebe has received a letter from Lisbeth, asking her to act as her chaperone while her mother is away. At first, Phoebe wants to turn it down, but subsequent events and the fact that she could use the money for her dream trip to Africa, she agrees to go.

Overhearing Julian declare her unkissable when Lord Waterburn dared him to kiss her, she was unprepared to face him that same day when he visited the school. While taking him on a tour of the school, she let him know that she overheard them, and he tried to apologize. Still, she was stunned and not sure how to act when she ran into him again at Lisbeth’s party. As they spend time together, she is drawn to him and knows the attraction is mutual. No one looks at her the way he does and no matter what happens, she will never forget it. Her mind tells her he belongs to her, but can she convince him? Will Julian give up his chance to restore another property to the family estate to be with Phoebe?
