Rather than open the box right away, Kara waits until she’s on a flight bound for Hawaii and her new job assignment as a volcanologist. Inside the box are a leather-bound journal and a beautiful oval stone. The journal tells the story of a young woman who defied her father and ran away from her clan rather than be bartered to a rival clan. Before running she took the clan stone (a magic talisman) and by rubbing the stone she was transported to another time and place. Kara questions if it’s possible that the story really could be her grandmother’s tale.
While she ponders the story, Kara idly rubs the stone and then notices strange clouds forming outside the plane windows. With the stone still clasped in her hand she gives into the overwhelming lethargy. Next thing she knows she’s waking up in Scotland - and not modern day Scotland either. She’s almost run down by a kilt wearing man riding a horse.
Alaxandar MacLeod is trying to uncover information regarding the violent raids against his clan. His horse almost tramples a beautiful unescorted woman in strange clothing and even though he’s attracted to her he also questions if she knows more about the raids then she’s letting on. Alaxandar has featured in many of Kara’s dreams - even before meeting him. Is it possible for them to have a happily-ever-after when they belong in different time periods?
Sloane McBride tells a captivating tale with HIGHLAND STONE. I was fascinated by the parallel between Kara and her grandmother’s experiences due to the clan stone. Alaxandar and Kara’s relationship is a whirlwind. He desires her yet isn’t sure that he can trust her. Kara’s attraction for him wars with her need for independence and the knowledge that she doesn’t belong in his time really complicates matters for her. I loved Kara’s fiery spirit and refusal to follow Alaxandar’s orders. He isn’t used to females not obeying him so her disobedience leads to some very interesting scenes and no shortage of humor on his part as he discovers he loves this disagreeable side of her nature. I was charmed by the rest of the clan members and their troublesome love lives and couldn't wait to find out how Alaxandar and Kara's relationship would turn out. Historically I know that Scotland has a violent past between rival clans so I really appreciate that Ms. Sloane doesn't gloss over the reality while still infusing enough fantasy to make this a memorable story.
