When Calin MacLeod was ten years old, he secretly watched as his father and his father’s lover Lena were murdered by her husband Laird Kinnon after Lena gave birth to yet another daughter. This daughter was to be betrothed to Calin in order to bring peace between the two feuding clans. Vowing to avenge his Da’s murder, Calin rescues the baby from certain death, and after branding her with his clan’s mark, he leaves her with his trusted friend Kendrick to be raised as a peasant on Kinnon land. Now, eighteen years later, Calin has returned to claim his bride and put into motion his plans to destroy the man who killed his beloved Da and inflicted terror and evil on so many others.

Akira Neish has lived a simple life with her family. The only excitement in it is reading the letters she receives from her mysterious benefactor; a man she has never met but knows that she will one day marry. All that changes when Akira is arrested on suspicion of being a witch because of the strange mark on her behind. Thrown into the vile prison Tigh Diadhail and prepared to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, Akira has given up all hope of rescue until she is purchased by a handsome warrior who claims to know her brother. Akira isn’t sure what to make of this man, Calin MacLeod, and she doesn’t entirely trust him. One thing Akira knows for sure is that her simple life is about to change forever.
After rescuing Akira from Tigh Diadhail, Calin knows that time is of the essence. He has to marry the heir of Laird Kinnon so that after the Laird’s death, the MacLeods and Kinnons can finally be at peace to unite against the English. Calin is worried about how Akira will react when she learns the truth; that she is in fact the daughter of the horrible monster who has destroyed so many innocent lives, including her real mother’s. Calin knows that hiding the truth from Akira isn’t the best way to go about getting his headstrong new bride to love him, but having her refuse to honor their betrothal isn’t an option either. Calin can only hope to keep his secret long enough to make Akira understand what is at stake with their alliance, and hopefully, for her to discover that she doesn’t want to live without him. Unfortunately, there are those around them that don’t want the alliance to succeed, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the true heir to the Kinnon lands doesn’t live long enough to align the clans.
HIGHLAND DRAGON is author Kimberly Killion’s second novel and I enjoyed it every bit as much as the first, HER ONE DESIRE. HIGHLAND DRAGON is set in medieval Scotland and through rich and lush descriptions of the landscape and characters, as well as a spot-on grasp of the dialect, Ms. Killion manages to transport the reader back to that time in history. The story is fast-paced and riveting, with many unexpected twists and turns, which kept me reading well into the night. The main characters, Calin and Akira, are intriguing and very likable and they have a genuine chemistry, which translates into some extremely hot and steamy love scenes. I highly recommend HIGHLAND DRAGON to lovers of historical romance who are looking for an engaging, sexy and accurate portrayal of life, love and betrayal in the Scottish Highlands.
