Blaze Flambeau is the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Inverary, though her father acknowledges his daughters and they live with him and his new wife.  Her mother Gabrielle Flambeau was the duke’s long-time lover, and she borne him seven daughters out-of-wedlock, before eventually committing suicide.  Seeing how love only gave her mother heartache and seven daughters, Blaze has no plans to marry or fall in love ever.  However, her stepmother Roxie, having already matched up two of Blaze’s sisters with royal husbands, refuses to accept that Blaze will never marry.  Happy as Roxie is in her marriage, she wants everyone to marry and live happily.  Blaze cannot help admiring her stepmother, who, like her, is determined to reach her goals.  Blaze hates her red hair and freckles.  She has a twin Bliss, but she looks nothing like her. Blaze also has a special gift; she can communicate with animals, but this means she can also hear their suffering.  Therefore, she has a plan to build a refuge for unwanted and abused animals.  To do this, she needs to come up with money.  Her father has given her the thoroughbred Pegasus, which the determined redhead plans to enter in the races.  To set her plan in motion, Blaze needs to win the thoroughbred races this year.

Ross MacArthur, the Marquis of Awe, does not bother with maidens and married women. His father and the duke are close cousins, and they would like nothing more than to have their children marry.  Even so, he is not that familiar with Blaze.  His mother died years ago and his father married Celeste, a vicar’s daughter, who has buried two husbands and rapidly made her way up society’s hierarchy.  She has two sons, with whom Ross does not get along.  Ross’s stepmother has plans for Ross to marry his stepsister Amanda.  Though she is beautiful, Ross does not want to marry her.  So, whenever they come to town, he moves out to the local inn to keep from being caught in his stepmother’s marriage trap.  He has no desire to get married to anyone.

Blaze’s stepmother, the Duchess of Inverary, invites three bachelors, a prince, an earl and a marquis, to dinner to meet Blaze, with the hopes that Blaze will fall for one of them.  One of the gentlemen is Ross, who waltzed with Blaze at her sister’s wedding the previous year.  Though he made her feel pretty by dancing with her, he then proceeded to dance with every female at the wedding, bursting her bubble.

Ross arrives early for dinner and, visiting the duke in his library, notices a red-haired girl digging a hole in the lawn, as he looks out the window.  Realizing the girl is Blaze, and that she is burying her stepmother’s fur coats, he determines to beat out the competition.  He volunteers to help Blaze with Pegasus, who refuses to go through holes during races.  Spending time together, Ross tries to get closer to her and she slowly responds.  In helping her, he becomes privy to her secrets and desires her even more.  By fair means or foul, he is determined that she will marry him, even if he has to blackmail her into it.   But, how is he going to win her love?

Wickedly funny and deliciously sensual, MARRYING THE MARQUIS, the third book in the FLAMBEAU SISTERS series, is a delightful historical romance.  In addition, this story is filled with suspense, mystery and intrigue, as the winning thoroughbreds are suddenly being targeted to die.  The suspense intensifies when Charlie, the duke’s jockey, is killed.  Who is so desperate to win that he would kill off the competition?  With the help of Blaze’s gift and the gift of her sister Raven, who seems to know things in advance, an investigation into the murders is conducted.  The sisters all seem to stick together and each has her own gift.  After reading Blaze’s story, I look forward to reading each sister’s story.  Those who enjoy MARRYING THE MARQUIS may also enjoy the first two books in this series, TEMPTING THE PRINCE and PLEASURING THE PRINCE.  DO not miss MARRYING THE MARQUIS!
