Jack Thorndike hates London high society. He thinks that the Ton are a bunch of insufferable bores. Now that the season is over he can hardly wait for the Ton to head out to the country and leave him in peace. He spends much of his time in areas of the city that others consider dangerous in pursuit of entertainment. When he sees a beautiful young woman being accosted by two men down by the docks he knows he has no choice but to offer his assistance before she gets herself killed.

Miss Angela Ainsley has traveled to London from the small town of Lower Pennington to deliver food for the poor when she is attacked. A gorgeous man comes to her rescue and for Angela it is love at first sight. She is determined to find out more about Jack and to see him again.

Jack is surprised when Angela arrives at his house but he is even more shocked to realize that she erroneously believes that he is the Duke of Stratford. He knows that a vicar’s daughter is not the kind of woman he usually prefers but there is something about Angela that fascinates him. Instead of telling her the truth and sending her away he finds himself eager to spend more time with her. Jack’s life is about to get more interesting than he ever imagined.

DUKE PRETENDER by Sharon Lanergan is a delightful historical romance.  Angela is a lot of fun to get to know and Jack’s attempts to resist his feelings for her and his interaction with the other characters are very amusing. The author does a great job of making the town of Lower Pennington come alive and I really enjoyed getting to know its residents.
