At the tender age of eighteen, James Brandon expresses his love for his father's ward, Eliza. They begin discussing marriage, but their plans are cast aside when James' father announces Eliza is to wed James' brother. James is sent away as Eliza is married off to his brother.

James, realizing he has nothing left to make him happy, buys a commission and joins the army. After several long years, James receives news that Eliza and his brother have divorced. He returns to find his one and only love on the brink of death. Eliza asks James to care for her daughter, also named Eliza, before she passes away.

James honors her wish and resumes his army career to provide a better life for little Eliza. James is lost without Eliza, but he takes comfort in knowing he has a part of her, little Eliza. After his brother's death, James comes into some property. He leaves the army to make a home for himself. More tragedy befalls James over the years. One wonders if he will ever find true happiness again.

In this retelling of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY by Jane Austen, Ms. Grange really delivers...She manages to stay true to the original story and really captivates her readers. COLONEL BRANDON'S DIARY was an engaging and highly memorable read. I was drawn to the main characters from the beginning. This is a story full of tragedy, romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ms. Grange shows an extraordinary talent for writing regency romances and this one really took me back in time. Jane Austen fans will surely love her stories as much as I do.
