Lady Angela of Parr’s life is forever changed due to the outcome of the Battle of Hastings. The Norse king William has been crowned as the new ruler of England and under his ruling all unwed ladies, widows or maidens of childbearing age have been summoned to Hertfordshire.  The women, as well as their properties, will each be betrothed to one of William’s esteemed barons.

Since Angela can speak French, King William has entrusted her with speaking to the other ladies about the changes that will occur in their lives as well as explain the consequences of not accepting his dictates.  In exchange Angela will be married off to one of his finest knights.  That’s a ‘reward’ Angela could happily do without.

She has no love for the Normans but she does understand that fighting fate is futile.  When Angela returns a couple kittens to their mother for a young girl in the kitchen she meets a man she finds appealing.   Unfortunately he’s a smithy and as thus ‘beneath her.’  What she doesn’t realize is that her smithy is as smitten with her as she is with him and he is no smithy, he’s a knight who was using the blacksmith’s fire to make repairs to his sword.

As Angela and Damien’s relationship progresses they’re both confident that the King will agree to their match.  Only King William has another husband in mind for Angela.  Defying the king will put both Angela and Damien’s lives at risk.  Will they be able to find a way to be together even if they can’t change the king’s mind?

At a time when women had very little control over their own lives, Lady Angela chooses to go with her heart rather than the dictates of an overbearing king.  BETROTHED TO THE ENEMY is a pulse pounding historical story that allows readers to step back in time and imagine how you’d feel if everything about your life was dictated at the whim of your liege lord.  Angela’s a spirited young woman who’s willing to make changes but isn’t about to marry a man who disgusts her.  Damien’s a determined man who’s torn between his devotion to Angela and his duty to the king.  H. C. Brown’s storytelling abilities shine in BETROTHED TO THE ENEMY and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more stories by this author.
